Yves Klein

Yves Klein is a French artist born in Nice in 1928 and died in Paris in 1962.

He is considered one of the most important actors of the pictorial avant-garde of the post-war period.

The important bibliography generated by Yves Klein's work has made it possible to better know or discover his multifarious activity. The most eminent of its historians have told of his extraordinary adventure, his odyssey, his life. All marked by symbols, myths, biases, an unshakable faith in himself, with what it represents as put into question and challenged, on the part of this man convinced of his truth.

The short life of the artist was, until his death and even this one a total commitment, absolute and without reserve. His faith, others will say his pride, his religion was entirely in his work - this was his life, and his life was his work.

Through a few sentences, quotations and observations, it is possible to recall that Yves Klein's work can be summarized as follows: "On the one hand, the concept, on the other, poetics".

This freedom that he claimed in his life, his art and his means of expression, he wanted to find, almost limitless in his work.

Reaching the highest stage of freedom for man passes, at Yves Klein, the purity of color. Since then, it has become essential to find a "material" that preserves "pure color" without sacrificing its creative, aesthetic and artistic requirements.

He made numerous attempts with all the dyestuffs that were at that time available on the market, to finally find the pure blue pigment. This color will become his trademark, more commonly blue klein or IKB.

Yves Klein is both a painter and a sculptor. He has made sculptures from historical icons such as the victory of Samotrace, the dying slave of Michelangelo, the Venus, etc.

To paint his paintings, he used naked women that he covered with paint and was then spread on the moving canvas.

Yves Klein is today one of the leading masters of the new realists and today his klein blue has marked the history, because of its concept and its influence.
