Artist's biography

Tom Wesselmann was an American painter born in Cincinnati (Ohio) in 1931 and died in New York in 2004. Recognized for his qualities as a draftsman and colorist, Wesselmann studied Art at the Cincinnati Art Academy and the Cooper Union. from New York after graduating with a degree in psychology.

With Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, he is considered one of the major artists of the pop art movement. At the end of the 1950s, he began his artistic career, seeking to stand out clearly from the abstract expressionism in force at that time, while remaining at the best of the strong influence he has for the artist Wilhem de Kooning .

His work wsa rich and varied. We found both figurative works and abstract compositions. He also used the technique of collage and assembly to which he incorporated advertising objects, appliances and reproductions of paintings.

Tom Wesselman revisited traditional themes like nudes (American great Nudes), still lifes (Still Lifes) and landscapes (Landscapes) in his painting, denouncing the consumer society.

He is also initiated to the cutting of his paintings, following the contours of the painted image in order to better exploit and use the resulting space of the cut forms, as elements of compositions (the series of Mouths Smokers or Bedrooms Paintings) . Some of his works are of an exceptional format, reaching more than 8 meters in length

In 1983, Wesselmann also began to work on steel and aluminum, by cutting lines of often painted drawings, before placing them directly on the wall (works called "Steels Drawing")

The coldness of the metal thus comes in opposition to the flexibility of the lines, most often representing naked women. The wall on which the work is hung became, so to speak, the sheet of paper of the drawing.

Towards the end of his life, we observe a return to abstract painting, without however calling into question the figurative character of his paintings.

In 1961, he organized his first personal exhibition in the Tanager Gallery, located in New York, before a retrospective tribute to the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal in October 2012.
