Artwork's description

From 1989, Georges Mathieu presented a period which he himself called "Barbarians". It is characterized by large canvases where the colors are explosive, chaotic and violent. Georges Mathieu, grasped the tension of the society in which he finds himself: according to Georges Laffly, "his measuring instrument is his painting itself". The artist is shocked by the abundance of murders and wars: he lives in a tragic world which touches him sentimentally. He no longer tells the battles of history but those of his time. In this work, the splashes and explosions of colors are distributed over the entire surface of the canvas. He explodes the colors by letting the paint fall on the canvas. The colors contrast with each other but the dominant one remains red, which refers to this daily violence.
