Artwork's description
Stephan Balkenhol is considered one of the most famous German visual artists and sculptors. He began his sculpture work in the 80s, when many artists at that time produced abstract works. Him, against the current, began to do figurative work and always continued on this path.
Balkenhol, creates his sculptures from simple blocks of solid wood using hammers, electric saws and chisels. He creates characters standing, motionless, devoid of social identity, simple and ordinary. The artist plays with proportions, creating smaller and larger than normal silhouettes. The sculptures are raw and bear the visible imprint of the work. These figurative statues are much more than pieces of wood, which have taken on a human appearance, they are alive.
In 2020, Balkenhol exhibited thirteen of his sculptures at the Palais de Iena.
