Artwork's description
This work by Gunther Förg, titled Untitled (2001), is made with acrylic on wood and lead. Composed of two vertical panels, it embodies the artist's ongoing exploration of the interactions between materials, colors, and surfaces. In this diptych, the dominant colors, an earthy red and a deep green, are applied in rectangular planes, separated by a thin horizontal strip, creating a minimalist visual balance.
For Förg, the use of lead is not incidental. This heavy and unconventional material in painting brings a density and coldness that contrasts with the lightness of the acrylic. The metallic aspect of the lead is barely perceptible here, but it physically grounds the work, evoking a palpable tension between hard and soft, heavy and light. This opposition enhances Förg's inquiry into the materiality of painting and how it can interact with the surrounding space.
