Artwork's description

This work by Jean-Pierre Pincemin, dating from 1980, reflects his exploration of the boundaries between abstraction and materiality. Through a composition of juxtaposed vertical bands in earthy and sunlit tones, the artist succeeds in creating a subtle tension between geometric rigor and the sensuality of color. The oil on paper mounted on canvas gives a dense, almost tactile texture, inviting the viewer to scrutinize the surface to uncover its infinite nuances of material.

The large color planes, ranging from ochres to yellows, seem to respond to each other in contrasting harmony, evoking a quiet architectural structure. The apparent simplicity of the composition conceals an underlying complexity in the treatment of light and forms, a recurring characteristic of Pincemin's work during this period. Each band of color interacts with its neighbors, creating a dynamic between stillness and latent movement.

Jean-Pierre Pincemin, a former member of the Supports/Surfaces movement, departs here from the radical experiments of his early career to focus on a more inward, introspective quest. The sobriety of the work reflects a meditation on pictorial space, a silent exploration of the relationships between form, color, and material.
