The technique used here by Riopelle is limited to an almost atmospheric application of watercolour with a brush. He then creates filaments in Chinese ink that segment the work. "(...) Here, where the subject fades away, where Nature is denatured, where the form is deformed to leave room for pure writing. This writing in black ink, erratic and yet perfectly mastered, will predominate in Riopelle's watercolour-inks between 1946 and the early fifties."
