Positif Négatif

30 May - 18 June 2023

Over the centuries, black and white have had multiple uses and meanings.
In painting, their use began to grow particulary in the 20th century. With the advent of abstraction, artists began to explore the possibilities of black and white, using the contrast of these two colours to create both saturated and pure compositions.
Positif Négatif confronts artworks of different artists from different movements. It highlights how each of them used these two colours to express their unique vision.
Alexander Calder, Bernar Venet, Zao Wou-Ki, Victor Vasarely... Like a score of music, they used their own technique to create works transcending the limits of space and time. All challenged plastic obstacles and knew how to reveal multiple possibilities of these two colours. Black and white allow to stay on what is most essential: the shape and the light.
Throughout this exhibition, a game of chess begins between the various abstract, figurative, geometric and minimalist compostions.
