Artwork's description

Chagall's world is that of poetry and spectacle. He draws his inspiration from his imagination in order to create a fantastic kingdom, mixing his memories and the traditions of his Russian heritage with the stylistics of his decade. A great circus enthusiast, he saw in him a universe of colors, mixing tragedy with comedy. Chagall delivers here an intimate and personal reading of this theme. We find all the characteristics specific to the artist: the vibrant colors that recall the costumes and the make-up of the artists, the style and the liveliness of the brushstroke. Midnight blue evokes darkness, sadness and melancholy. The music brings back nostalgic memories of a world that has fallen forever into brutality. Conversely, it also represents the theme of the bride, which evokes joy and transmission. This woman represents Bella, “ the eternal fiancée of Chagall ”, in whom the women who shared his life after her were symbolically reincarnated. She is here in three-quarter length, wearing a piece of lacy white dress, holding a bouquet. Bella symbolizes absolute love, its eternal source of life. Chagall creates this work using several collages including a piece of lace from a wedding dress.
