Sam Francis

Chromatic Alchemy
Galerie Alexis Lartigue, 2026

The exhibition Chromatic Alchemy, devoted exclusively to the work of Sam Francis, will be presented at TEFAF Maastricht in 2026 before continuing at the gallery. Conceived as a monographic presentation, it highlights the singularity and coherence of an artistic trajectory that asserted itself on the international stage in the postwar period. The works brought together bear witness to this development across a broad chronology, ranging from the radiant blues of the 1950s to the chromatic explosions of the 1990s. His sustained engagement with Paris, Tokyo, and California fostered a distinctive synthesis between Western abstraction and an Eastern-inspired spatial sensibility, in which colour becomes at once energy, structure, and breath.

We are pleased to present the catalogue published on the occasion of this solo exhibition. Conceived as an extension of the installation and as a contribution to the study of his oeuvre, it brings together carefully produced reproductions of the exhibited works, accompanied by critical essays and documentary material intended to illuminate the coherence, concerns, and evolution of the artist’s pictorial research.
